Neighborhood history:

Located next to the Río de la Plata, Puerto Madero is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in the city and makes up a very pleasant setting for strolling and dining on the terraces of its many restaurants.

Since the foundation of Buenos Aires there have always been problems for the arrival of large ships to the shores of the city due to the shallow depth of the river. In 1882 the government contracted Eduardo Madero for the construction of a new port that would provide a modern image to the city.

Ten years after the construction of the port, with the increase in the size of the ships, Puerto Madero became obsolete and fell into a state of great decline. Years later it was decided to rehabilitate the area to turn it into the pleasant space it is today.

Puerto Madero is one of the most pleasant areas of Buenos Aires and it is a real pleasure to walk through its lively promenades full of people at any time of the day. Among the attractions of the area, the colorful Puente de la Mujer stands out, the work of the artist Santiago Calatrava.

Puerto Madero has some of the city’s historical treasures moored in its docks, such as the Sarmiento Frigate and the Uruguay Corvette, two ships with an interesting story to tell their visitors.

Next to the old port is the Costanera Sur Ecological Reserve, an ecological reserve, as its name suggests, that offers surprising landscapes a short distance from the city center.
