LA BOCA NEIGHBORHOOD

Neighborhood history:

La Boca is a colorful, picturesque and full of life neighborhood that shows visitors its friendliest side, offering them snapshots of the images on a postcard.

La Boca owes its name to its location at the mouth of a creek in the Río de la Plata. Used as a port for many years, its port activity attracted numerous immigrants, especially Genoese, who settled in the area in search of work.

The construction of the houses in the area was made of wood and sheets painted with innumerable and striking colors from the paint that was left over in the port, giving the neighborhood a peculiar and charming appearance.

The main attraction in La Boca is the picturesque Caminito pedestrian street, a beautiful street more interesting than the best of the city’s museums. Among the colorful and curious buildings of Caminito there are numerous restaurants, terraces and painters’ stalls as well as tango dancers who make visitors fall in love with the magic of their steps.

La Boca is also home to the well-known stadium of the famous Boca Juniors soccer team, better known as “La Bombonera”, opened in 1940.
